In mid-2024, VYD successfully implemented the Football Leaders project in collaboration with BACA and Longhill Schools. The project aimed to enhance leadership skills and boost confidence among young people with mixed abilities, including those with special educational needs (SEN) and behavioural challenges. The participants underwent Level 1 leadership training, which involved a blend of theory and practical sports activities.
Participants, including less confident individuals, developed a sense of belonging and self-belief. They demonstrated improved teamwork and communication skills, solving problems collaboratively and presentation skills saw significant enhancement, with all participants expressing confidence in speaking before a group by the end of the course, which was truly inspiring to witness.
Older participants linked leadership skills to future career and educational aspirations.
Younger participants at BACA identified applications for leadership skills in various activities, including sports clubs and community roles.
Participants led football sessions for younger groups, both within their schools and in local primary schools. This practical application highlighted their progress and encouraged creativity and confidence in leadership roles.
Teachers and support staff noted remarkable improvements in participants’ attitudes, leadership abilities, and overall behaviour. Participants, especially those previously seen as behaviourally challenging, displayed newfound responsibility and role model behaviour.
The project fostered understanding and connections within the community, demonstrating the potential for continued leadership and positive impact.
22 young people directly benefited from weekly sessions combining sports and leadership activities. These participants, in turn, positively influenced approximately 50-60 other young people through the practical sessions they led. Continuous evaluations through peer, self, participant, and observer feedback indicated a marked improvement in confidence and self-belief among participants. A notable example is a participant who transitioned from extreme shyness to confidently leading groups with positive body language and effective communication.
Testimonials:
PE Teachers at BACA:
They observed significant improvements in students’ attitudes and abilities, predicting that these students could serve as future ambassadors for the school.
Matt, Head of Sports at Longhill:
Praised the course’s “alignment with the school’s leadership strategy” and noted the positive effects on both students and teachers.
The Football Leaders project at BACA and Longhill Schools effectively enhanced leadership skills and confidence among young participants. The structured blend of theory and practical application, combined with continuous feedback and evaluation, led to significant personal growth and positive behavioural changes. Future iterations should consider logistical improvements, particularly regarding digital learning materials, to further optimise the training experience.
