VYD is delighted to present ‘Away From Home: ESOL & Football’ sessions for refugees and asylum seekers aged 16-18.
The project has been funded by Brighton & Hove City Council and will feature 24 participants displaced from Ukraine and other places around the globe.
VYD has experienced ESOL teachers and refugee football coaches within its ranks, having successfully delivered sessions for over three years now. VYD also recently collaborated with a London-based organisation to deliver iSpeak Football, an ESOL and football project for refugees.
The Away From Home sessions will begin on April 20th on Thursdays between 4.30-6.30pm at BHASVIC 6th form college, which is applying to become a College of Sanctuary. The class-based lessons will run from 4:30- 5:20pm, followed by a short break for snacks, the football sessions will take place on the sports field from 5:30-6:30pm.
The lessons will use football as the key component in the learning and are aimed at people who are at beginner and entry levels 1 and 2. The course is non-accredited with no exam and will focus on creating a sense of belonging, encouraging peer-to-peer interaction, and increasing confidence. We are hoping to have some higher-level learners supporting us in the classroom.
VYD is a fully inclusive football and education organisation that looks to offer the best possible opportunities to the marginalised and disenfranchised both locally and from around the world.
